I realized this this afternoon and went down to el. rich building to ask about this... apparently the quota(1M) command went to shit on anvil and I was it's bitch, this time... apparently this happens often and yes... I'm pissed. but it's taken care of, so I'll just go pick up the 140 page manual they printed out for me. *BWHAHAHAHAHAH*

Die Eastnet Die

So my box is finally getting stable. Network outtages are becoming more and more a problem of Eastnet instead of my server.

Yet they remain an unbearable problem.

To demontrate, read this text:
Packet Loss to $1.65 Hub: 0%
Packet Loss to Eastnet Rtr: 0%

It updates every 5 minutes or so, showing the packet loss in percentage to both the house hub and the main eastnet router.

A percentage in packet loss is like this: if i say "HELLO!" to a hub 10 times, and it only says "HI!" back to me 5 times, I have a %50 packet loss. This usually means that roughly half of my outgoing/incoming traffic is ignored, much less properly dealt with.

Goddamn OIT.

So my sister is graduating from high school, today. (do not fear those who care i will take many pictures with my camura!) Then tonight, for reasons unclear to me, she has gotten me in to her Project Graduation! (do not fear, those who care, I will take many pictures with my camura!)

Then, I am to ride home with my Mother¹. Aiieee.

THEN! I have lots of fun work to do at CRB:

• Write Visual Basic (s/basic/python/g) for wearable computers!
• Act like the artificial intelligence Jane from the Ender's Game series in a rather dumb research project²
• Build a computer for me to do my work on³.
• Get paid full time for doing all these things and more⁴.

That Eastnet and my webserving box have gone to shit, bringing the page down often and without warning. I would fix the problem with the server, but i am faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar away, getting hungry and waiting on my sister's graduation, which is on Friday (tomorrow. ignore the wrong date up there).

so... here i am - it is now (well you can read time stamps as well as I can) and I just woke up. Isn't it just the most depressing thing in the world to have to wake up when it is still dark outside? It is even more depressing that pretty much all of my friends just went to sleep. (In my dazed state I looked at my buddy list to see if anyone was still online - but it turned out that I missed them by about 10 minutes).

Okay, so we wrote this damned thing in Java.

It mostly works. In some cases.

So we put it all together and had it all working and turnin time came along. We panicked, we zipped everything up, we shipped it off to the turnin script.

To see if it was all good, we sent it to a brand new computer that hadn't seen anything from the project.

It worked under two different forms of Java on two different operating systems.

SO WHY THE FUCK CAN'T I FIND A COMPUTER IN THIS CLUSTER THAT CAN RUN IT?!?!

Something awful just happened. You know those plastic 20 oz coke bottles? Well they give them out for free at work. So I finished mine, and I was trying to suck all the air out of it, but I got my tongue stuck in the opening. The bottle kept sucking at my tongue, and it really hurt.

Then I noticed some liquid left in the bottle. I thought it was coke, but it was really spit. And I drank it.

And it wasn't very good.

Projects and Other Fun Things!

Hey Merty! What is your project and why does it involve something refered to as "Dina(h) the Cat"? If it also include an Eddi(e) the Chinchilla, we might have to have a talk (mainly because there's only 1 'e' in Eddi, you know.)

Not that anyone really cares, but my own project at the moment involves breaking variably sized messages into 8K packets and sending them reliably across a network. (Basically we've written a bastardized cross between UDP and TCP. We don't have a handshake agreement, but we can still be called reliable. Go figure.) It essentially works for any message of size X, except for when we randomly dump garbage to the screen. This garbage dump doesn't seem to be variable on the number of times we've sent messages, or the size of the messages sent. Yeah, it's a lot of fun.

My secondary project involves getting my laundry done sometime in the near future. All the damn laundry machines on West Campus are broken again, and I am in need of clothes before I go to Philadelphia this weekend...

Well, it's 3:16am. I've been working on Skeek for nigh-on 5 hours. I can't say that's entirely true. Very little of the work I have been doing has been directly with Skeek. Most of it has been going to reading tokenized HTML from search results off of MP3.com and listen.com. Ugh.

That's not a problem, though. I am in pretty good shape as far as this Squeak project goes. The thing that does worry me is that I have another project due later in the day that no one in my group is currently working on. Here's a rundown:

• Me: I'm not working on it because I am doing another project. Not to mention the fact that I have done nearly all of the design/implementation/coding/work up to this point. I just hope my damned engine works.
• Amy: About 4 hours ago, Amy came here to take a break from working on the project in question. She was going to get food around 12:30am and get back to work. I expect her to wake up Real Soon Now and to *NOT* bite me like she did when I tried to wake her. (Editor's Note: I am just kidding about the biting. It is encouraged.)
• Kamron: Kamron is a busy busy man. So much so that he doesn't have time to notice that he put up an away message for 'Sleep' when he was actually running off to a meeting. Poor kid.
• Donko: It is possible that Donko *is* working on this project. He may be beating his face against the monitor in frustration and sweating from the superhuman effort he is putting forth for the project. Even so, no one will be able to read his code, or explain why the icon for 'Dina(h) the Cat' looks like an X.

On the other hand, Amy now has a network in her room and my laptop can be a part of it, so I may be finding myself online and able to do magic things like edit my webpage!!!!! YAAY!!! I think my first goal is to find a decent program for linux that will convert and resize files in big chunks from the command line. That would make my life so HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY. Yours, too, since I would be using it to thumbnail my folders of digital camera pictures whose subjects range from my trip to California to drunk people chilling in the Woodruff elevator. WHEEEEE.

In the latest 'All Your Base' news (why do i feel I need to follow this? =sigh=), it got slipped into Sluggy Freelance, pretty silently, and into User Friendly in far less subtle ways. Thanks to lazarus for the heads up on the User Friendly, and for calling me cute.

So last night I was up procrastinating at the CRB, waiting for an LED to explode (it never did. YAY!) and listening to the radio.

We had tuned in to Loveline (almost nightly at 11pm on 96.3FM, for you atlanta-folk) and were chuckling along when a girl called in. My pretend transcript goes something like this:

Adam: Hello, [some name], you're [some age], right? What can we do for 'ya?

Daniel's grandfather passed away on sunday and they had a funeral service on monday. So yesterday was about the first day I got to spend with Daniel in over a week. His parents are staying with his grandmother for the week and she's decided to live there in Nashvill by herself. that's good and bad. Daniel says he thinks its a good thing though. But she's such a sweet lady, its sad that she's all alone.
In all this spare time of being grounded and alone.. my room has become amazingly spotless! as soon as I can get all my post-it-notes down it'll look rahter nice.. need more explodingdog though. ;) WEllp! gotta work on my nevative english paper.

In order to view it, you'll need a Genesis Emulator, the Game, and the Save State. Wherever you install the emulator to, put the save state in the base of that drive. So if you installed the emu to C:\Program Files\wgens\, put the save state in C:\. Then load the game, and hit F8. That's the end of the game. For all skill levels (trust me, I've already beaten it on all 3 levels).

From Sunday, 4am, to now (check the timestamp, I'm too lazy to look at a clock), I have had 12160 requests [and rising. the fact is that i have already written this post once and my browser crashed before I could post it. when i wrote it THEN i had 12095 requests. that was about 7 minutes ago.] to my webserver for ONE FILE:

I find it really funny. A long time ago I had seen stileproject.com to have "All Your Base Are Belong To Us!" as its title. I didn't recognize it, but I thought it was pretty damned funny. Late last week, wiess linked me to a file on his server (guess what it was) saying some guy had given it to him over IRC. I clicked it. I watch it. I fell out of my chair. I took several minutes to recover. So I downloaded it to my web page, linked it in my away message and walked away.

A couple of days later people started hitting it, and they JUST HAVEN'T STOPPED.

I didn't make this shockwave. Word around the web is that I am the originator, or atleast the main outlet for people who wanna see it. I find that really funny. Supposedly, the guy who made it is happy that it's getting so much traffic.

It would seem that an updated version of the famed 'All Your Base' shockwave flash has been released by the same authors as the first version. Nothing major, just some minor graphical adjustments, and a slightly longer song. You can find it here or wherever schmarty decides to mirror it to.

In similar news, I figure bob.dy.kz has taken about 12000 individual hits to the original, while my own visyz.dy.kz has only taken about 400. But then I've also gotten about as many hits for the very poorly dubbed zerowing mov. In terms of linkage, well I only got the referal log turned on yesterday so I'll make it a very conservative 20 individual posts to message boards and other web pages, the bulk of the referrals coming from (get this) web-mail systems. It would seem AYB has become a chainmail. Scary.

But this is of no concern, since I'm sure it will make the rounds pretty quickly and be on everybody's page, to the point where World+Dog (to steal from TheRegister) has seen and is bragging about how badassed All Your Base is. I ph34r the day the script kiddiez find it though... sigh.

On another note, I've stumbled across a bad dubbing of the full intro here. The game is called ZeroWing, and is for the SNK. I forget what SNK stands for right now, but I vaguely remember it being a very old console that either tried to compete in the same era as Sega Genesis/Turbo Grafx 16/Neo-Geo/SNES. That or it was NES/Sega Master System's competition. In either case, it sucked and died really hard and so now you can only play ZeroWing through emulator. Yaaay emulators! There is Life after Death! (For game consoles, anyways).

You're sick because I probably got you sick, der Schmeenkey. I am better now, but 18 has the flu (so she thinks), and I wasn't feeling too well a couple of days ago. So fear not! It will only last a day (or so).

Well, it's another Friday, much like any other Friday of any other week, only different.

Ugh. I'm sick. I think I have a headcold. It's really weird, because NO ONE I know has a headcold but me. Where did it come from? What has have I done that I should fall victim to such an illness??? It is a mystery, surely.

Tomorrow I need to go to Radio Shack®. You would not BELIEVE the problems I have had in trying to get something as simple as a 2N2222A transistor. They are supposed to be one of the most common electronic components in existence, yet I cannot get my hands on them. There are none here at the Future Computing Environments lab, and every time I try to arrange transportation to Ack Electronics, where I know they will have them, my plans fall through. So tomorrow I am going to Radio Shack® and I am gonna get me some damned parts. GARRRRR.

Played some GAMES yesterday for the first time in a loooooooong time. Got in a bunch of Tribes, then some Quake 3 Pong!!! If you own Quake 3 then you NEEDS MUST TRY this mod atleast once. It will stomp on your head.

In case you're wondering why I haven't updated in so long and why I'm talking about computer games like they're a special treat, it's because I seem to have gone and gotten myself a girlfriend. I don't know how much she wants me to talk about her, here, but I've got plenty to say if she doesn't mind me saying it. She makes me really happy and she gets as much of my time as she wants and probably a little bit more. She's really really really great. I'll be more specific if and when I find that she likes me bragging to the world about how cute/smart/funny/wonderful she is. :)

Of course, most of you who read my page (hi mom!) already know about Amy. You will be hearing lots more, I am sure. Prepare yourself.

I haven't updated in so long that my very own webbrowser didn't autocomplete the URL for news posting. That is soooooo sad.

I'm sorry for abandoning my page so mercilessly, to all three of you who keep poking me to update it. I think I will try soon to mirror it onto my laptop in an effort to work on it when I am not in my room (i.e. - any time). I don't know how that will work out, but... ::shrug::.

Oh well. Lots of crazy junk is going on lately. I have started sort of doing some research work in the Future Computing Environments lab up at the Centennial Research Building. If I can make some LEDs blink in time with a nice video chip, then I can maybe keep working there and do fun researchy things, for CREDIT!

Classes seem to be going okay. Got a good grade on my first programming assignment, so I am happy. I think I can make the 3.0 I need. ... Keyword being *THINK*. I'm putting forth the effort, though, so I should make it. ::hope hope hope:: I have a crapload of programming to do tomorrow night and this coming weekend for both 2340 (squeek!) and 2335 (PSY1000 for programmers!). =sigh=

Crazy other stuff has gone on. I got my hair dyed deep dark crazy red (it looks way different in different light) and cut for FREEE (well I paid for the dye). It was SOOOOOOO neat. I spiked it up and was all punk for awhile, but then it got too long and fell down. Thankfully I have a digital camera so I got a few pictures. Those will hopefully go up, along with a WHOOOOLE lot of other pictures I have from the new fun happy XMas toy. :)

La la la. I should either now learn parallel port programming under linux or do some Japanese or Combinatorics homework or move things around on my computers in preparation for messing up my local LAN or working on my webpage. Soooooo many things to do... it almost makes me wanna go to bed. ;)
